Here are some helpful tips to help you find the problem and fix it.
Tip 1: Make sure you inspect each rail joint. Rail joints are often a cause of train derailments. Make sure that they are properly fitted and level. Use a fine file after the track has been spiked to smoothen the surface.
Tip 2: Inspect Turnouts. Track switches or turnouts are a frequent cause of derailments. This is a problem area for model train repair. Too tight a track gauge can push the flanges against railheads, causing the wheels to rise and derail.
A gauge that is too wide can cause the wheelsets to climb, as well. Too many turnouts are too wide. This can be fixed by filling in the area between the guardrail and the gauge until it fits snugly.
Tip 3: Make sure you check your wheelsets. Check that the wheelsets are in the correct gauge and centered on each axle. It is possible to correct a wheelset that is not in the right gauge by turning the wheel around the axle until it matches.
