Working Principle and Types of Centrifugal Pump

Centrifugal slurry pumps are simple in design and strong in construction. A slurry pump's working principle is much simpler than that of other pumps. The rotating impeller creates a circular motion as the slurry enters the pump.

The centrifugal force pushes the slurry outwards and it moves between the impeller's blades. Once it reaches the impeller's edge, the slurry gains speed. The casing converts the high-speed energy into pressure energy.

The centrifugal pump increases the pressure of liquids and solid particles by using centrifugal force. This transforms electrical energy into kinetic energy that is used to pump the slurry. This system makes it easy to pump light slurry liquids and is maintenance-free.

Four types of centrifugal Slurry Pumps

Hydrotransport

Hydrotransport pumps can be used in many applications, as moving slurry through water is hydrotransport. These slurry pumps are best used with water-based solutions. These slurry pumps are used in industries that require dredging.

Tailings Transfer

Tailings transfer pumps are the ideal type of pump to transport tailings and finer abrasive material resulting from Hardrock mining. This includes fragments of mud or ore as well as the chemicals that were used in the mining process.

Cyclone Feed

These pumps are similar to tailings pumps and are used in hard rock mining. They are also comparable to hydrotransport pumps because they are used in dredging operations. These pumps can be used in all stages of scalping, separating solids according to particle size, and other operations.

Flotation Froth

A slurry pump can also be used for transporting froth, however, the air trapped in the froth can negatively impact the pump’s performance. Even though slurry pumps are built with sturdy construction, the air contained in the froth can damage the pump and shorten its life. But, with proper preventive measures of centrifugal pumps, you can reduce the wear and tear of the pump.
