What Are The Types of Addictions?

Drug addiction is a serious problem that can lead to long-term health problems. Drug addiction is when a person becomes physically and mentally dependent on a drug, which causes them to behave in ways that are harmful to themselves.

There are a variety of types of addictions, but the most common are to substances like alcohol and drugs. Other types of addictions include shopping, eating disorders, and internet gaming. There is no one definition of addiction, but it generally refers to a strong desire or need for a particular substance or behavior that becomes so powerful it interferes with daily life. Addiction can develop from any type of substance or behavior, including cigarettes, food, video games, and online shopping. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) classifies addiction into three categories: psychological dependence (the need for the substance to achieve its desired effects), physical dependence (a change in the body's chemistry that results from repeated exposure to the substance), and behavioral dependence (the tendency to engage in behaviors associated with using the drug).

Addiction is often accompanied by changes in brain function. The prefrontal cortex—a part of the brain involved in decision-making and problem solving—may become less active as an addiction progresses. This may lead to problems with impulse control and motivation, as well as difficulty staying focused on tasks.

There is no one cure for addiction, but treatment typically includes counseling, therapy, and medication. People who are addicted often need to attend Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or another similar program in order to learn how to manage their urges and stay sober.
